Solar Garage Door Opener: Costs, Advantages and Disadvantages

Would you like to open your garage door with a solar-powered opener? You’re wondering what it costs and what advantages and disadvantages this type of drive has to offer? We’ll explain what you have to pay attention to, how a solar garage door opener works and what you need to install it.

How Does a Solar Garage Door Opener Work?

A solar-powered garage door opener uses the sun’s energy along with a rechargeable battery. In contrast to an electric door opener that works with electricity from a plug, a solar-powered garage door opener with rechargeable battery does not rely on mains power.

The system consists of a solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity, a rechargeable battery that stores the collected energy and the garage door opener itself. The solar panels charge the rechargeable battery during the day. The rechargeable battery stores the energy. The opener therefore also works at night or if it’s cloudy.

Advantages of a Solar Garage Door Opener

A solar-powered garage door opener with rechargeable battery has many advantages.

  • Sustainable: If the sun is shining, you use completely renewable energy. You are not dependent on fossil fuels and reduce your CO2 emissions.
  • Independent: An electricity connection in your garage is not required.
  • Cost-effective: Using free solar energy saves you the electricity costs in the long-term, particularly in the summer months.

Disadvantages of a Solar Garage Door Opener

A solar-powered garage door opener can also have disadvantages.

  • Space requirements: In contrast to a purely electric garage door opener, you require space to install the solar module.
  • Acquisition costs: The costs for a solar garage door opener are initially higher than those for an electric door opener.
  • Garage alignment: If the solar module can only be attached to the north side (= no solar radiation), a solar garage door opener is probably not the right choice.
