Upgrading A Garage Door Opener: What Should I Pay Attention to?

Would you like to upgrade your garage door with an electric opener? Great idea! In this article, we answer frequently asked questions on this topic and tell you what you should consider when buying an opener.

Can I Upgrade Any Garage Door With An Electric Opener?

Yes. For example, you can upgrade an old tilt door with a garage door opener just as well as a new sectional door. The important thing is to find out ahead of time which opener works with your door. Basically, we differentiate between swing doors, tilt doors and sectional doors:

  • Swing doors swing outward when opened and are then slid under the garage ceiling. This means that a swing door requires space in front of the garage, but not inside the garage.
  • Tilt doors operate similarly, but the door tilts into the garage and does not swing outward during opening or closing. Tilt doors are often used for underground garages.
  • Sectional doors are divided into several sections that slide under the garage ceiling. Single-walled sectional doors are suitable for garages that do not require thermal insulation. Double-walled sectional doors allow good to excellent thermal insulation.

How Do I Find The Right Opener For Upgrading My Garage Door?

Here, three points are important: your type of door, its height and its weight. You can find out whether you have a swing door, a tilting door or a sectional door using our explanation above.

Most doors have a small type plate on which you’ll find the correct designation from the manufacturer. In most cases, this has all the relevant data.

What if there’s no type plate? Measure your door’s width and height. We explain step by step how to find the right door opener in our tutorial on the topic.

My Swing Door Is Very Old and Always Very Hard to Open. Can An Opener Help?

You can also usually upgrade an old swing door with a garage door opener. If the door becomes hard to open over time, the problem usually lies elsewhere. Normally, garage doors have balanced weight. This means: The door’s weight is borne by door springs (balanced), so that it’s easy to open and close. If opening and closing gets harder with time, the old springs may have to be retightened or replaced. For this, it is best to go first to a professional dealer. We’ll be glad to recommend a competent installer near you. This person can also recommend a suitable garage door opener for your swing door.
